Apple paid $5 million for the rights to film the book by Michael Lewis about the founder of the FTX bitcoin exchange Sam Bankman-Fried.

The latter received a film adaptation in 2015. Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. The film grossed more than $133 million worldwide against a budget of $28 million.

In 2022, Netflix released the documentary “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King” about the death of the founder and CEO of the bankrupt Canadian cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX, Gerald Cotten.

In the same year, the streaming service announced a series about Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, accused of laundering assets stolen from the Bitfinex trading platform.

FTX filed for bankruptcy in November 2022. In December, Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas and extradited to the States, where he was released on bail of $250 million. Later, the court revoked his release and took the former head of the exchange into custody until the next hearing.

Bankman-Fried was charged with 13 felonies. Prosecutors later dropped charges of financing certain politicians as part of a deal with the defense. The FTX founder pleaded not guilty to any of the charges, including bribing a Chinese official.
