The capital's bridges, suffering from "fatigue" and landslides, have become another example of systemic problems in the city government of Kyiv. “The media reported that the rotting and collapsing metal fences of the North Bridge are just one example of the unsatisfactory condition of the capital’s key transport arteries.
At the request of commentary journalists, the Kyiv City State Administration noted that the relevant authorities regularly monitor the condition of the bridges. However, photographs systematically appearing on social networks indicate that taxpayers' funds are disappearing in an unknown direction.
Despite the millions of hryvnias that are allocated annually for the repair and maintenance of bridges, Kiev residents continue to risk their lives by moving on emergency structures.
The Kiev City State Administration assures that the Kyivavtodormost municipal enterprise is carrying out large-scale repair work. In particular, we are talking about the South and North bridges, the Kakhovsky overpass No. 2 and the overpass from the Dnieper descent.
“As part of the current (medium) repair work carried out using the own resources of the Kyivavtodorgorod municipal enterprise, in the period from 2018 to 2022, 11 structures were removed from incapacitated and limited working conditions. As part of the overhaul (reconstruction) work, 16 bridge structures were removed from incapacitated and limited working conditions,” the statement says.
However, new problems appear faster than old ones are solved. This encourages greater transparency in the work of city authorities and requires public attention to control the use of city resources.
