European central banks sold to the National Bank of Ukraine more than 970 million hryvnia cash received from Ukrainian refugees in 2022 in exchange for local currency.
The return of cash hryvnia was carried out within the framework of the NBU project with Narodowy Bank Polski: at the end of November, the Ukrainian central bank received the entire volume of hryvnia exchanged by Ukrainians abroad under an agreement between the NBU and the central banks of ten European countries, the regulator reported on Facebook .
In addition to Poland, the central banks of Switzerland, Belgium, Latvia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Sweden and the Netherlands participated in the agreement.
By the time the cash hryvnia returned to Ukraine, the main hub that accumulated it was the National Bank of Poland.
