The Rada supported sanctions against the Russian defense industry for 50 years

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Wednesday, November 22, supported a resolution approving the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) on sectoral restrictive measures in relation to the defense industry of Russia and Belarus for a period of 50 years.

We are talking about the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of November 20 “On the application of sectoral special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions) to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the military-industrial sphere.”

At the vote in parliament, the corresponding legislative initiative (No. 10271) received the support of 304 deputies.

“By this decision, the National Security and Defense Council supported the proposals made by the Cabinet of Ministers on the application of certain sectoral economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions) in the military-industrial sector for a period of 50 years,” the publication says.

What preceded

Let us recall that on November 20, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky introduced to the Rada a bill on sectoral sanctions in the Russian Federation and Belarus in the military-industrial sphere. The document proposed to approve the corresponding decision of the National Security and Defense Council of the same day.

Restrictions on the Russian and Belarusian defense industry will remain in effect for 50 years.

What exactly are the restrictions?

According to the document, it is planned to apply the following sectoral sanctions against the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the military-industrial sphere for a period of 50 years:

  • a ban on conducting transactions with goods and services, the international transfer of which is subject to the Law of Ukraine “On State Control over International Transfers of Military and Dual-Use Goods,” with residents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, including those carried out with the involvement of residents of other states;
  • stopping the fulfillment of economic and monetary obligations in favor of residents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus for operations on military and dual-use goods.
  • prohibition of the transfer of technologies and rights to objects of intellectual property rights to residents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus; prohibition on the implementation by residents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus of actions to obtain protection documents, perform other actions related to the protection of rights to intellectual property (inventions, utility models, industrial designs, layout of semiconductor products, trademarks, geographical indications, plant varieties, copyright objects and related rights), except for actions to extend the validity of intellectual property rights and extend the validity of protection documents; prohibition of registration and accreditation of collective management organizations whose founders are residents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus;
  • termination of joint projects and industrial programs in the field of security and defense, the participants of which are residents of the Russian Federation and/or the Republic of Belarus, in relation to military and dual-use goods.

Sanctions of Ukraine against the Russian Federation

Ukraine has imposed many layers of sanctions against Russia and Kremlin-linked oligarchs. Even at the beginning of the invasion in 2022, the NBU banned the circulation of the ruble and closed Russian state-owned banks. Ukrainian courts routinely confiscate Russian assets.
