Images with fake ID cards generated using a neural network and various AI services have appeared online. With their help, it was possible to bypass the Know Your Customer (KYC) user identification procedure, reports 404 Media.
The OnlyFake website generates fake documents from 26 countries, including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and a number of European countries. Users are offered to purchase plausible images of a passport or driver's license. The cost of such a fake is $15.
Media representatives claim that for the sake of an experiment they used generated photos to complete the KYC procedure on the OKX exchange. The fake ID allowed the registration to be successfully completed, the authors note.
On social networks, users also claim that using the created images they were able to cheat KYC in companies such as Kraken, Bybit, Bitget, Huobi and PayPal.
The owner of the OnlyFake website, hiding under the nickname John Wick, allegedly contacted journalists. He claims that the generated fakes also make it possible to pass KYC on the Binance, Coinbase exchanges and the neobank Revolut.
At the same time, the website states that the resource “does not produce counterfeit documents.” The created images are intended for use in films, illustrations and shows, the administration emphasizes.
OKX said the company has initiated an investigation to find out all the details. Representatives of the exchange stated that they strictly adhere to security requirements and are ready to eliminate any attempts to defraud the KYC procedure.
“We aggressively combat fraud on our platform and strive for the highest standards of compliance. The misuse of artificial intelligence to carry out fraudulent activities is an evolving and industry-wide issue that OKX is studying comprehensively,” OKX noted.
