The Economist counted the losses of Russians in Ukraine

During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, between 462,000 and 728,000 Russian troops were killed or wounded.

This data is provided by The Economist, based on documents from the US Department of Defense.

Much of the analysis is based on probate data and obituaries on social media and other sources. However, since February 6, Russian media data is based on trends as access to official records has been disrupted.

According to the publication, Russian casualty figures are consistent with other sources: officials in France recently put the total number of casualties at 150,000 through May, and BBC Russia estimated that at least 113,000 Russians had died through June.

In addition, data from Russian opposition media indicate a significant increase in Russian casualties during the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the summer of 2023 and after the battles for Avdiivka and Chasov Yar.
