The Base network experienced a massive outage

Coinbase's Layer 2 network went down and was down for 43 minutes. During this time, no new blocks were produced. This is the first major failure since the launch of the Base network. Let us remind you that on August 9, 2023, Coinbase presented the public version of the mainnet.

On September 5 at 21:36 UTC, the creation of new blocks in the Base network stopped. The developers released a fix, and after 43 minutes, the blockchain resumed operation.

“We have encountered a delay in the production of units due to some of our internal infrastructure requiring upgrades. We have implemented a fix and are seeing service restored,” a Coinbase spokesperson told Cointelegraph in response to an inquiry about the outage.

Base noted that they continue to monitor the network, and the cause of the failure has been identified and eliminated.

Collective Shift platform research director Matt Willemsen said there are potential problems with using Layer 2 networks. In his opinion, the Ethereum main network works much better “in combat conditions” than Arbitrum One, zkSync Era, Base and other Layer-2 solutions.
