In the spotlight

In Ukraine, pensions will be assigned according to new rules: the requirements will be tightened already in 2024, not everyone will receive pensions

In Ukraine, the rules for assigning pensions will change in 2024. If in 2023, at the age of 60, those with 30 years of experience can retire, already next year the requirements will be tightened by 12 months. That is, only those who have at least 31 years of experience will be able to retire. The rest will have to work until they are 63 and 65 years old.

Increases in seniority requirements will continue over the next four years. As a result, Ukrainians will need to have at least 35 years of experience. When developing such an innovation and introducing it in 2017, neither the Ministry of Social Affairs nor the Rada suspected that Ukraine would face a coronavirus and then a full-scale war. Both factors affected employment.

Determine what year you will reach your 60th birthday. If it's after 2028, you'll need to have at least 35 years of service to retire on time. If you turn 60 years old earlier than in 2028, then you need to fulfill at least the following requirements:

  • in 2023 you need to have at least 30 years of experience;
  • in 2024 – from 31 years old;
  • in 2025 – from 32 years;
  • in 2026 – from 33 years;
  • in 2027 – from 34 years;
  • in 2028 – from 35 years.

If you don't meet these conditions, you may be able to retire at age 63. To do this, you need to earn (depending on when you turn) the following by your 63rd birthday:

  • in 2023 – from 20 to 30 years;
  • in 2024 – from 21 to 31 years old;
  • in 2025 – from 22 to 32 years old;
  • in 2026 – from 23 to 33 years old;
  • in 2027 – from 24 to 34 years old.
  • in 2028 – from 25 to 35 years.

To receive a pension at 65, you must have at least 15 years of service. Moreover, already in 2028, according to calculations by the Ministry of Social Affairs, only half of Ukrainians will be able to retire at 60 years old, 5% will retire at 65 years old, the rest at 63 years old.

In Ukraine, with a salary three times higher than the average, the pension will be only 14 thousand UAH. At the same time, for most Ukrainians this pension size is unattainable.
