Vitalik Buterin spoke about the further development of Ethereum after the Dencun update

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin spoke about the further development of the network after the Dencun update. The programmer stated that the project has evolved from a financial system into an independent decentralized technology stack.

In his blog, he shared his thoughts on blob objects, the need for intra-network scaling of projects and distribution of data processing in rollups.

Blobs

According to Buterin, one of the key points for Dencun is the implementation of the EIP-4844 proposal, also known as proto-danksharding or BLOB (binary objects). The main goal of this technology is to reduce gas in the Ethereum network thanks to a new transaction structure.

Buterin notes that in the early stages of launching blobs, the commission decreased by 100 times in L2 networks. However, subsequently the number of operations associated with EIP-4844 increased significantly, which led to the exhaustion of the gas limit in the Base L2 blockchain.

Buterin believes this demonstrates the need for a broader view of Ethereum's transformation. According to him, in addition to optimizing data processing, the network needs internal scaling of rollups. This will allow them to function stably as user activity increases, the programmer said.

Ethereum Scaling

The developer points to the increased role of L2 solutions in recent years. The Ethereum ecosystem is increasingly focused on these projects, and many teams have begun to transfer their applications from the first level to the second, Buterin emphasized.

The blockchain roadmap initially provided for the creation of a separate data availability space for L2 projects, the programmer writes. The EVM will not have access to it, which will significantly reduce transaction fees and also simplify the process of processing them, he noted.

The developer suggested using data availability sampling (DAS) technology. With its help, each node can verify the correctness of the data published by analyzing small samples. The introduction of technology, according to Buterin, will make it possible to increase the size of blob objects to 16 MB.

In the first couple of days, the developer proposes to implement a simplified version of this technology - PeerDAS. Theoretically, it will allow binary objects to be scaled by 8 times, Buterin says.

In parallel with PeerDAS, the programmer proposes using EIP-7623 to set more stringent restrictions on the maximum block size with “regular transactions.”

In the future, Buterin allows for the introduction of more complex DAS systems, which will further increase the size of blobs and increase the efficiency of operations within Ethereum.

Improving L2 solutions

Vitalik Buterin paid special attention to improving L2 solutions. He identified four main areas in which they can improve:

More efficient use of bytes when compressing data.

Application of the Plasma data processing method, allowing second-level solutions to selectively place information on the chain.

Parallelization of data processing, which will make it possible to conduct several transactions simultaneously.

Increasing the security of rollups and strict compliance with the principles of decentralization of projects.

Buterin noted that the first ten years of its existence, Ethereum was at a stage of peculiar learning and formation. With the rollout of the Dencun update, programmers no longer have "any excuse" when it comes to app quality and development standards, he said.

“Today we have all the tools we could ever need to build applications. They are both “cypherpunk” and user-friendly,” Buterin emphasized.

In his opinion, the ecosystem should offer people intuitive applications that follow the main principle of decentralization. As an example, the programmer cited the Farcaster social network project and the Daimo crypto wallet.

Buterin believes that many teams are still focused on the “2010 Ethereum” workflow. The developer called for moving away from this paradigm and rethinking the process of creating an application so that their projects are more consistent with the concept of technological progress.
