The ruling Georgian Dream party on Friday, September 1, announced the launch of impeachment proceedings against Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili.
The leader of the ruling party, Irakli Kobakhidze, said at a briefing that the reason for the decision was Zurabishvili’s visits to Europe, which she did not coordinate with the government.
At the same time, the government blocked the president’s visits to EU countries, as well as to Ukraine on Independence Day.
For the procedure to be successful, 100 deputies must vote for impeachment. However, Georgian Dream does not have such numbers in parliament.
Zurabishvili became President of Georgia in 2018. Then it was the Georgian Dream and its founder, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who supported her. After the start of the war in Ukraine, relations between the president and the government began to deteriorate.
The coalition plans to first file an application to initiate impeachment proceedings with the Constitutional Court. After this, parliament will hold a vote. To implement the decision of the Georgian Dream, it is necessary to enlist the support of the opposition.
Let us note that, in particular, due to its pro-Russian position, Georgia did not receive candidate status for EU membership.
